Bosch was named for this saint, and the Ghent museum says he took Jerome as a role model, a scholar of relentless moralism who left public life in Rome for an ascetic life in Palestine.
The scholar has put everything down. Howard Oakley points out the cardinal's scarlet hat lying at his feet beside a closed book, and the scarlet cassock hung over a hollow trunk where an owl perches. Jerome lies face down among rocks and thorns, a crucifix clasped between his forearms.
His lion, which legend says he freed of a thorn, has shrunk to a house pet.
