Our Lady sits as a queen, in ermine and a crown of pearls and precious stones, her eyes lowered, the Child upright on her knee. Around them the angels press close, and the KMSKA reads their colour: the three blue cherubim for purity and air, the six red seraphim for love and fire. Jean Fouquet made this as the right half of a diptych; the other half, in Berlin, shows Étienne Chevalier, treasurer to Charles VII, who commissioned it, with his patron, Saint Stephen. No document records the commission. Dendrochronology and style, the museum says, suggest it was ordered around 1450. Red and blue stand close about them.
