About this painting

She is dressed as a queen — ermine, a crown of pearls and precious stones — and the colour around her is not decoration. Three blue cherubim stand for purity and air; six red seraphim for love and fire. This is the right half of a diptych and the man it was made for is in Berlin: Étienne Chevalier, treasurer to Charles VII, kneeling with Saint Stephen. No document records the commission. Dendrochronology and style put it near 1450, which is as close as anyone has got.
