The Christ Child presses His face to His Mother's cheek and sets one hand flat on her breast; Our Lady holds Him with both hands, eyes lowered. There is nothing behind them but dark. The Met's catalogue traces the pose to the Byzantine glykophilousa, the affectionate Virgin, and notes what Bouts left out: the gold ground and the halos. In their place the Met finds subtle, tactile modelling of flesh. The God who made the stars has a cheek, and she can touch it. At eight and a half inches high, the image was made for private devotion, small enough to hold near one face at prayer.
