Three nails and a crown of thorns lie on the bare ground, set down like tools. Christ lies beside them on a white sheet, and the living kneel around Him. Geertgen tot Sint Jans painted it as the inner face of the right wing of the high altar of the Order of Saint John at Haarlem, which the Kunsthistorisches Museum calls his masterpiece; the centre with its Crucifixion and the left wing were destroyed in the Iconoclasm or the Spanish siege. The museum's record notes the wing was cut down at the top, and traces it through Utrecht and Charles I of England to Vienna. The nails stayed.
