About this painting
This is a survivor. It was the inner face of the right wing of the high altar of the Knights of Saint John at Haarlem — Geertgen's masterpiece — and the centre panel with its Crucifixion and the whole left wing were destroyed, in the Iconoclasm or in the Spanish siege. What is left is the mourning. The panel has been cut down at the top, then carried to Utrecht, back to Haarlem, given by the States General to Charles I of England, and on through two more collections to Vienna.
