Our Lady holds the Child in her lap, and He lies on His back with one arm out toward her. Saint Joseph sits on a low brick wall, a short staff planted beside him, white hair over his ears, head bowed over the Child. A loose ring of pebbles lies around the three; through the arch stand a white square tower and a far town. The Cavallini to Veronese entry says the figures, especially the elderly Joseph, recall those of Giovanni Bellini. Klára Garas dates the work between 1500 and 1504. Giorgione was in his twenties, and Saint Joseph, the oldest figure in it, keeps watch.
