About this painting

The baby lies on his back and points at his mother, one arm out. Joseph sits on a low brick wall, a short staff planted beside him; Mary sits on a rock; a loose ring of pebbles surrounds the three. Through the arch, a white square tower and a far town.

Look at Joseph. Old, head bowed over the child, white hair in tufts over his ears: the surveys say the figures resemble Giovanni Bellini's, he above all. Klára Garas dates it early, between 1500 and 1504. Giorgione was in his twenties; his Joseph is the oldest thing in it.
