A thin column stands between Saint Catherine and the altar. The priest faces the chalice with one hand raised; behind her, Christ Himself brings His hand to her lips. The Metropolitan Museum says these panels were the first extensive narrative cycle of Catherine of Siena, commissioned after her canonization in 1461 and based on the biography by her confessor Raymond of Capua. Giovanni di Paolo, the Met notes, manipulates space to enhance the mystic character of his subject. The Met suggests the Pizzicaiuoli, the dry-goods guild, may have ordered the altarpiece in 1447. If so, grocers paid for the first pictures of a mystic.
