About this painting
She had been a saint for less than five years when this was painted. Catherine of Siena was canonised in 1461, and these panels are the first extended painted life of her ever made, taken from the biography her confessor Raymond of Capua wrote in 1385. They were added as a predella to an altarpiece that already existed — probably the one the Pizzicaiuoli, the dry-goods guild, ordered in 1447 for their chapel at Santa Maria della Scala. A guild of grocers paid for the first pictures of a mystic.
