Three saints lean out of the gold and hold out their habits, and Saint Catherine, kneeling in white beside an altar, reaches up. The Cleveland Museum of Art names them, Dominic, Augustine and Francis, and says she takes Dominic's; know him, Cleveland adds, by his lilies. Raymond of Capua, her biographer, puts the habit first in a dream, as Edmund Gardner retells it: Dominic held a white lily that burned and was not consumed, and offered the black and white habit of the Sisters of Penance. Awake it was harder; the sisters were widows and did not want a maiden. Giovanni di Paolo keeps the lily in Dominic's hand.
