Saint Catherine kneels on a small cloud between the houses and holds up a heart, red and dripping. Christ looks out of a burst of gold above the roofs, and rays run down from His hand to her. One heart has gone; one has come. The Metropolitan Museum places the scene in the first extensive narrative cycle of her life, based on the biography by her confessor Raymond of Capua and commissioned after her canonization in 1461 for the foot of a large altarpiece. The Met notes the way Giovanni di Paolo manipulates space to enhance the mystic character of his subject. The town goes on around one exchange.
