Saint John the Baptist steps out through a town gate, still a boy, and higher up he is already climbing the rock. He leaves home twice in one frame of stone. The Art Institute of Chicago says Giovanni di Paolo represents figures more than once to show them moving through imaginative, stylized settings, and that the story begins here, as John leaves civilization for the wilderness to become a hermit. The museum holds six panels from a group of twelve that possibly formed the doors of a reliquary shrine to the Baptist. The fields below lie ruled in stripes, and the path keeps going up.
