A giant wades a river bent over his staff, and the weight on his shoulders is the Christ Child. The Boijmans tells how the heathen Reprobus carried a child across the water and felt Him grow unbearably heavy, for it was Jesus, who bears the weight of the sins of the world. Baptised, the giant took the name Christopher, Christ-carrier, and became the patron saint of travellers. Bosch sets the crossing in an extensive landscape dotted, as the museum says, with extraordinary scenes, and any road in it could be the one you take tomorrow.
