A steel glove holds the crown of thorns over His head, and Christ looks straight out, past four men closing in. One wears a spiked collar, which the National Gallery reads through the old habit of painting Christ's tormentors as dogs. His robe was always white; the Gallery has found no trace of faded red in it. For the Gallery the crown of torture makes the shape of a halo. Underneath lies another painting, an unfinished Saint Christopher carrying the Christ Child on his shoulder, probably also by Hieronymus Bosch: the Christ-bearer covered by the Christ-mocked. The face turned toward you has seen both.
