He can still choose. Death has reached the door, holding an arrow; the man in the bed gestures toward it with one hand, and with the other toward a bag of gold a demon holds up. An angel kneels at his shoulder, pointing to the crucifix in the window.
The National Gallery reads the room as a balance: a demon on the canopy carries a lantern of Hell's fire against the single ray of light from the cross.
At the foot of the bed, perhaps the same man earlier in life drops coins into a chest while fingering a rosary.
