About this painting

Look down at Christ's feet. Patrimonio Nacional's 2016 catalogue of the Escorial Boschs points to the board he is made to tread on, studded with nails, a detail it finds in fifteenth-century miniatures.

Around him walks a procession of men of bourgeois appearance, impassive. One wears a cape marked with a crescent moon, which the catalogue identifies with the Turkish heretic. Simon of Cyrene, in a white tunic, is being told by another man to help Christ.

Above the nails and the crowd, Christ looks out at the viewer, and the catalogue's word for that look is meekness.
