Two half-figures stand at the edges, larger than anyone in the stable, and between them a green curtain has been drawn aside. The Gemäldegalerie says they have been recognized as prophets who opened the veil over the Nativity and stepped back, heralds showing the beholder what it means.
Shepherds come running in from the left, one with his mouth half open from the effort. Angels gather around the Virgin and the Child in the manger.
In front of the manger lies a sheaf of grain. The museum ties it to Christ's words in John, the bread come down from heaven.
And they came with haste: and they found Mary and Joseph, and the infant lying in the manger.
