Jacob sleeps on the bare ground with his head on his hand, sandals still on, and over him heaven opens. Nicola Spinosa, writing for the Prado, calls it the posture of a tired traveler, beside the gnarled, leaning trunk of a tree almost bare of leaves. The ladder of angels Jusepe de Ribera sets above him is made of delicate forms in quick, essential strokes, and it nearly dissolves, Spinosa says, into a whirl of golden light. What holds solid is the sleeper; what he sees is barely there. The signature, once hard to read, may be why royal inventories called it a Murillo. The light keeps coming down.
