Sizes

What is dpi?

Dots per inch: how many pixels of the museum’s file go into each inch of paper. Our floor is 240 for sheets up to 20 inches, 180 up to 36 inches and 120 beyond, because a larger print is seen from further away. We never offer a sheet below the floor, and the number on each size is the one you receive.

About this painting

The hands are the centre of it: locked together between his knees, knuckle on knuckle, so tight they have gone pale. He sits on a boulder in a field of broken grey stone with his bare feet on the rock and his cloak pulled round him, and he has been there all night; behind him the sky is turning pink before sunrise and the land is still in shadow. Ivan Kramskoy painted it in 1872, and the Tretyakov Gallery, whose founder bought it from the painter the same year, records that the horizon cuts the canvas into two equal halves, the cold earth below and the light above, with the clasped hands exactly at the centre of the picture. No devil is shown. The Academy offered him a professorship for it and he refused. Forty days, the Gospel says, and afterwards he was hungry. This is what the forty days looked like from inside.

And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, afterwards he was hungry.
