The room is dark and the window behind them is empty light. Mary holds out one small flower, its petals set like a cross, and the Child takes it in both hands and studies it with the whole weight of His attention. The Louvre, which borrowed the picture in 2019, reads the flower as the Passion handed forward and her smile as her knowing it. Leonardo began it in 1478, in his twenties, and the Hermitage has kept it since 1914, when the Benois family sold it. What she gives Him here, He will give back to us.
