About this painting

At the right edge the stoning spills onto the next wall. At the centre Stephen is dead, laid out on the axis of a columned nave at the point the Web Gallery of Art reads as the crossing, and the tiled floor and coffered ceiling frame his bier.

The mourners are Lippi's contemporaries. Roggero Roggeri identifies the heavy figure at the right, in a cardinal's ample red, as Enea Silvio Piccolomini, Pope Pius II. Tuscany's regional guide sees a probable self-portrait in the older of the two friars flanking him: the painter, himself a friar, standing at the bier.
