Saint Catherine rests her hands on a spiked wooden wheel, and Lorenzo Lotto has put his name on the wood: Laurentius Lotus, 1522, lettered at lower right. The Web Gallery of Art records that scholars find her intensely like a portrait, and that she began as an image for private prayer before Lotto himself reworked her for display in a church. The portrait shows in small things: a slender crown looped with pearls and red and green stones, a gold ring on the third finger of her left hand, a palm laid across her body. She looks straight out, at whoever has just come in.
