The cat is the only one who gets out. The Rete Museale delle Città Lottesche finds it not at all pleased with the commotion; the Marche region's tourism site reads it as evil fleeing the divine presence. Everyone else stays. God the Father plunges from the sky, in the network's phrase, like an ancient swimmer. The angel kneels with a lily and one arm flung up, frightened, the network says, by the enormity of what is happening. Our Lady has been interrupted at her prayer book and turns toward us with both palms raised, in a tidy room with a nightcap, a towel and a candle. Lorenzo Lotto made it for the Oratory of the Confraternity of Santa Maria sopra Mercanti in Recanati. Only the cat is running.
