A cat is running for its life. It bolts across the tiles between Gabriel and the Virgin with its back arched, and both institutions that publish on this picture read it as evil put to flight by the divine presence. Everything else has stopped: the angel kneels, the Eternal Father hangs overhead, and Mary has turned her back on the messenger to face out at you with her hands raised. Only the cat is moving.
And the angel being come in, said unto her: Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women.
