A reed rests in bound hands, a cord at the wrists, and drops of blood run from the thorns down the face and throat. The Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya sees Christ shown alone at the moment of His condemnation before the crowd, and under the paint it found more. Its infrared reflectography turned up the pricked dots of a stencil on the robe over the shoulders, the forearms, the hands and the reed, and faintly in the face, especially the nose. The museum reads them this way: assistants transferred Luis de Morales's own model, a version of the one from El Pardo now in the Prado, and the image was repeated to meet demand, by the master or his workshop. As of 2015, it notes, no such template had been documented in any painting by Morales or his circle. The reed He holds was traced before it was painted.
