Blood and tears run down Christ's face, and His eyes stay open. The thorns sit low on the brow; both hands come up, open, the wounds showing. Katarína Bajcurová, writing for the Slovak National Gallery, reads the blood as the Passion recalled and the tears, crystalline under heavy lids, as grief over His Mother's suffering. She explains that Aelbrecht Bouts made such diptychs for private prayer, Christ crowned with thorns on the left wing and the lamenting, praying Virgin on the right. This one survives, she notes, as the left wing of a probable diptych. The Mother He weeps for is missing, and the place beside Him stands open.
