A hammer lies on the floor, and nails beside it, and a broom that has swept nothing up. Christ sits in the crown of thorns with His cheek in His hand, the cross leaning on one side and a column on the other. Luis de Morales gives Him a thinker's pose, legs crossed and chin cupped, and the Minneapolis Institute of Art finds Him both regal and melancholic, set among the column of the Flagellation and the cross He carried. Mia reads the image as lifting Christ out of the story to meditate on the objects of His pain, a model and a mirror for whoever prays before it. On the floor the museum lists the tools that built the cross: hammer, awl, nails, broom. The tools that built the cross lie at His bare feet.
