About this painting

He is not suffering; he is remembering. Morales lifts Christ out of the narrative altogether — legs crossed, chin in hand, seated among the instruments that did the work: the column he was tied to, the cross he carried and was nailed to. The pose is a thinker's and the melancholy is regal. Minneapolis reads the panel as it was meant to be used: Christ meditating on his own Passion becomes the model and the mirror for whoever prays in front of it. The devotion is not to watch the pain but to sit with it.
