A red curtain is drawn back from a white bed, and Gabriel kneels barefoot on the floor with a lily in one hand, the other raised toward heaven. Our Lady bows her head, one hand lifted, the other at her breast. High in the open window the Holy Spirit comes in as a Dove, with the light. The Word is made flesh in a bedroom, between the curtain and the sheet. Orazio Gentileschi painted it in 1623, at the end of his Genoese years, and the canvas stands nearly three metres high, so the whole encounter has to be looked up into. Turin's museum publishes almost nothing about it: no essay, one mention by name. The Dove is still at the window.
