In the foreground, below the Virgin, sits a group of sibyls, female prophets, as the Barnes Foundation identifies them. The title says why they are here: this is the Incarnation as the fulfillment of all the prophecies, and Rubens gives the prophets a place at the Annunciation itself.
The Barnes describes Gabriel announcing that Mary will conceive a son by the power of the Holy Spirit. Behind him a ring of cherubs encircles the dove. Julius Held catalogued the panel among Rubens's oil sketches.
High above, God the Father rests his arm on a sphere and extends his scepter downward.
And the angel answering, said to her: The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee and the power of the Most High shall overshadow thee. And therefore also the Holy which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.
