Six men press around a boy, and the boy is counting on his fingers. Our Lord stands at the centre, eyes lowered, one fingertip set against another as if numbering His answers, while old hands reach in to meet His and a bald doctor with a long white beard holds a book open below. Dürer painted the panel in Venice, on his second journey to Italy, and the Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza identifies it as the picture named in a letter to his friend Willibald Pirckheimer, the Nuremberg humanist. The half-length figures, and the heads gathered round one point, the child's face and hands, echo the Italian painting of the day. On the slip of paper standing out of the book in the foreground he signed and dated it. The doctors keep their books; the Word reasons on His fingers.
