About this painting
Everyone can be named except the woman it was perhaps painted for. Lucy by the cauldron and sword, Agnes by the lamb, Scholastica by the dove, Benedict by crozier and habit, Veronica by her covered head, Anthony by the lily: Cleveland names them, working out from the woman at lower right. Of her it says only she may be the patron.
Count the lamb's front legs. There are three. Pittoni painted one over; as the canvas aged, the covered leg came back. It kept a leg it was meant to lose and lost the name it was meant to keep.
