A dove rests at one saint's breast, a lamb lies in another's lap, and a pot of fire smokes on the ground below; everyone in the clouds can be named except the woman it was perhaps painted for. The Cleveland Museum of Art identifies them by their objects: Lucy by the cauldron and sword, Agnes by the lamb, Scholastica by her dove, Benedict by crozier and Benedictine habit, with Veronica and Anthony of Padua. Above them Our Lady holds the Christ Child. Of the woman kneeling at the lower right, whom an angel draws forward, the museum says only that her identity is uncertain and she may be the patron. Its soft light and rich colour, it adds, reflect Giovanni Battista Pittoni's study of French Rococo art in France in 1720. Cleveland notes a third front leg on the lamb, painted over, come back as the canvas aged. Count them.
