About this painting

The Child has hold of the bookmark. The Web Gallery of Art's commentary reads the scene as a pause in reading: the Virgin appears to be meditating on a passage in the book her Son is thumbing, and he, in a long white shirt, has seized the marker.

Massys painted it young, in the idiom of the Flemish Primitives: an ornate Gothic throne, halos of golden rays, and in the window stained glass of St Catherine between two escutcheons, with St Barbara in the window to the left.

Whatever passage she is keeping, his hand is on the place.
