A rope runs from Christ's neck down to a man's fist at the rail, and His own hands are bound at the wrist. The crown of thorns sits low on His brow and a purple cloak slips from His shoulders; beside Him stands a heavy man in fur and a gold chain, and behind Him mouths hang open. Quinten Massys ran words right round the frame in gold leaf, the Prado records, from Lamentations: O vos omnes qui transitis per viam, attendite et videte si est dolor sicut dolor meus, all you who pass by, look, and see whether there is any sorrow like mine. Then the painter puts you in the street. The viewpoint is high, so you stand behind three men below Pilate's balcony, and one of them, turning from the shouting, seems, the Prado says, to be asking your opinion. The rope is still in that fist.
