About this painting

A church spire rises gilded in the townscape, directly behind Rolin's clasped hands. Gelfand identifies it, almost certainly, as Notre-Dame-du-Châtel, the church that once housed this panel.

The capitals between him and the Virgin are carved with the Drunkenness of Noah and Abraham meeting Melchizedek: Old Testament wine and bread on Rolin's side, whose fortune was built on the vineyards visible in the landscape behind him, set against the Virgin's grace.

A single line still divides them. The crown an angel holds above the Virgin is, Gelfand argues, likely one Rolin gave that church: he kneels beneath his own gift.
