About this painting

The Christ Child has one arm round His Mother's neck and His cheek pressed to hers, and the whole garden holds still for it. Two angels with coloured wings lift a cloth of honour behind Our Lady, brocaded with plants and animals; roses, irises and lilies of the valley grow beyond. At the left stands a metal fountain, and the KMSKA reads it, with the lion on top, as a figure for Mary, praised as a fountain in the Song of Solomon. The museum takes this small work by Jan van Eyck, completed in 1439, for private devotion, prayed before at home. In His other hand, prayer beads.
