Cosimo de' Medici paid for this altarpiece for the high altar of the Franciscan friars of San Bonaventura at Bosco ai Frati, and he put his own saints in it. Friends of Florence, who sponsored its recent restoration, name them: to the left Anthony of Padua, Louis of Toulouse and Francis; to the right Cosmas and Damian, the Medici patrons, with the Dominican Peter Martyr. The shell-topped niche and classical wall behind the Virgin, they note, reflect what Angelico had just seen working in Rome. The main panel is printed on its own.
