About this painting
You are standing where the pope stood. In 1449 Nicholas V went down into the crypt at Assisi and, by the legend, found the body of Francis upright and uncorrupted; Milwaukee's own teaching notes say the painting puts us in front of the saint as if we were sharing that vision. The canvas is nearly seven feet, so the meeting happens at eye level. The peaked cowl throws the face into darkness. The only lit thing is the skull held against his chest.
