A friar stands in the dark holding a skull against his chest, and his face is gone under his hood. One bare foot shows beneath the wool. Zurbarán paints Francis as a pope was said to have found him: the Milwaukee Art Museum gives the legend, popular in the seventeenth century, that when Nicholas V visited the burial crypt at Assisi in 1449 the saint's uncorrupted, motionless body appeared above his coffin. The museum describes him standing full-length and life-size in Franciscan wool, a high peaked cowl casting his face into darkness, the stigmata on hands, feet and chest, a shaft of light on the skull he clutches. Few Baroque works, it says, address reality and illusion, substance and shadow, life and death so poignantly. Long dead, he is still holding his death with both hands.
