A blindfold, a rope, a raised fist, and at the edge a drum. Christ sits bent forward, wrapped in blue, and says nothing. The Alte Pinakothek describes Him suffering silently between tormentors who beat Him to the rhythm of drum and pipes, after the questioning before Caiaphas, when they spat on Him, covered His face and struck Him. The museum singles out the cloth, the rope and the slender hands, and calls this an early work in which Matthias Grünewald already shows the great colourist. The drum keeps time. The One who cannot see is the One they cannot stop looking at.
