They are beating him in time to music. Munich's own text has Christ crouching, blindfolded, leaning slightly forward and suffering in silence between torturers who strike him to the rhythm of drum and pipes — and the instruments are painted in. This is the earliest surviving Grünewald, from about 1503. The museum cites the verses itself: Mark and Matthew, where they cover his face, spit at him, and demand that he prophesy who hit him.
And they blindfolded him and smote his face. And they asked him saying: Prophesy: Who is it that struck thee?
