The brothers had quarrelled. When Damian accepted a gift from a woman they had healed, Cosmas asked not to be buried with him. After the five were beheaded the Christians meant to honour that wish, until, the Golden Legend says, a camel spoke with a human voice and told them to bury the brothers together. Angelico paints the camel beside the open grave, its words unrolling on a scroll, while a priest reads the office. The Web Gallery of Art places the panel at the right-hand end of the San Marco predella.
