About this painting

Cosmas and Damian, the twin physicians who took no fee, survived several attempts on their lives before this one. Three of their brothers already lie beheaded in the grass; the two saints wait their turn. The Web Gallery of Art reads the five cypresses behind them, set in a row parallel to the picture, as the five who die. The Louvre identifies the panel as part of the predella of Angelico's high altarpiece for San Marco in Florence, whose other scenes are now divided between Florence, Dublin, Munich and Washington.
