This is a small picture, 37.5 by 29.7 centimetres, and the Städel reads it as made for private devotion and for connoisseurs. Both show. The Virgin and Child sit beneath a throne built like a Gothic tabernacle, its canopy drawn in careful perspective, and twelve angels stand around them in twelve different attitudes: hands folded, crossed on the breast, raised, two turned away from us toward the throne. The museum has owned it since 1831. Printed large, it lets each angel be seen as Angelico drew it.
