Mary and Elizabeth meet on a flowered ground — two expectant mothers, each carrying an impossible announcement, recognizing each other's news in an embrace. The page comes from the Getty's Book of Hours attributed to the workshop of the Rohan Master, the anonymous painter whose circle produced some of the strangest and most affecting French illumination of the fifteenth century. The miniature is folio 48, painted about 1415–1420 in tempera colors, gold and ink on parchment: a page made to be prayed through. The Getty releases the manuscript's images under its Open Content Program.
