Sizes

What is dpi?

Dots per inch: how many pixels of the museum’s file go into each inch of paper. Our floor is 240 for sheets up to 20 inches, 180 up to 36 inches and 120 beyond, because a larger print is seen from further away. We never offer a sheet below the floor, and the number on each size is the one you receive.

About this painting

Bonnat made this for a criminal courtroom. The Petit Palais holds his sketch for the same commission and labels it, in the museum's own words, the study for the painting destined for the courtroom of the Cour d'Assises at the Palais de Justice in Paris; it bought both from the painter after the commission. What he produced has no crowd, no landscape and no consolation - a body against near-black, lit hard from one side, the feet set at about the eye level of whoever stands in front of it. A Crucifixion sized for a room where people are judged.

Jesus therefore, when he had taken the vinegar, said: It is consummated. And bowing his head, he gave up the ghost.
