Gabriel kneels and lifts one finger toward a round window above; the Getty says he points to the presence of God. Our Lady does not look up. She sits on the plain tiled floor, eyes down, both hands raised in surprise, her book set aside on the bench, and the Word is made flesh in a room with a pillow and a column. The Getty is careful about the red hanging behind her: it may forecast the Passion, or it may be simple decoration, since Bouts used the colour elsewhere. This was one of five paintings in a polyptych. Heaven points up; she keeps her eyes on the tiles.
And the angel being come in, said unto her: Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women.
