About this painting

Gabriel points upward, to a circular window and the God behind it; Mary does not look. She sits on the bare tiled floor rather than a throne, eyes down, hands lifted in the surprise of Luke's sentence — you shall conceive and bear a son. The Getty is careful about the red hanging above her: it may forecast the Passion, or Bouts may simply have used a colour he liked elsewhere, and the museum declines to decide. The panel is a fragment of a larger argument, one of five from a polyptych on the life of Christ.

And the angel being come in, said unto her: Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women.
