Gabriel kneels in a walled garden and extends a lily, Mary's emblem of purity. The garden closes on every side, echoing a garden long read as a figure of her virginity. He casts a real shadow on the grass.
Her right arm reaches unusually far toward the book she was reading. The Uffizi reads this as calibration, not error: the panel hung low over a side altar, its perspective possibly built to resolve from a lateral, right-hand viewpoint.
No patron or commission survives — only its arrival from San Bartolomeo a Monteoliveto, outside Florence.
