Fat Carnival sits astride a barrel with a roasting spit for a lance; lean Lent comes rolling up on a little cart, bringing two fish into the fray. Behind them a whole town square goes about its day: a well, stalls, a crowd, a church door. The Kunsthistorisches Museum is exact about what is real: every scenic detail matches the Shrovetide plays and carnival processions of the time, and folklorists have identified them one by one. What Bruegel invented is the simultaneity, everything on one afternoon that never happened. He signed it on a stone, 1559. Feast and fast meet in the square, and the church door stays open.
