The panel withholds Christ's face. The cross is T-shaped, evidently made of branches, the figure hung at an angle so acute the head is invisible, leaving the white loincloth, whose colouring Susan Foister reads as a vision of real presence, not a sculpted figure. Jerome kneels, beating his breast with a stone.
Pearwood, painted both sides. The back has no ground: paint straight onto bare wood, red streaks radiating from a yellow oval. Christof Metzger reads it as the Holy Spirit, a thunderbolt, striking the saint's heart. On the front he strikes himself. On the back he is struck.
