The Large Passion was published in 1511 as an illustrated devotional book, the Minneapolis Institute of Art explains, its woodcuts set with the Gospel narrative as told by the Benedictine monk Benedictus Chelidonius.
Mia reads this sheet as Dürer's emphasis on the humanity of Jesus. The Virgin sits at the lower left, lost in her grief, against the indifference of the mounted soldier on the right. A personified sun and moon flank the cross, and a skull lies at its foot.
Above and below, three angels catch Christ's blood in chalices, holding the eye on his fresh wounds.
