Michael drives his lance straight down, both hands on the shaft, and the sky leans with him. Angels swing a sword and draw a bow; beasts tumble with wings like torn sails, and far below a lake and a small town keep their ordinary day. The Met reads the sheet as Christianity triumphing over evil, Michael and his angels warring in heaven against the seven-headed dragon. It credits the cutting as much: with the Apocalypse series, Albrecht Dürer raised woodcut to the sophistication engraving had reached nearly three decades earlier, lines swelling and tapering into light, dark and space. The boats on the lake never look up.
