About this painting

Revelation gives the war in heaven a single line and Dürer gives it a whole sheet. Michael drives the spear down with both hands and his face is perfectly calm; below the fight, a Franconian valley goes on about its business, town and river and hills, entirely unaware. The block was cut in 1496 or 1497 for a book Dürer wrote, designed, printed and sold himself — the first in the history of art.

Sources: Petit Palais, musée des Beaux-arts de la Ville de Paris, 'L'Apocalypse : Saint Michel terrassant le Dragon (Bartsch 72)', GDUT4125 (Latin) and GDUT4124 (German), legs Dutuit 1902; with the Saint Louis Art Museum's account of the Apocalypse series (object 158:1928); read 2026-08-27.

And there was a great battle in heaven: Michael and his angels fought with the dragon, and the dragon fought, and his angels.
