Four horses come on at a gallop, and nobody on the ground gets clear in time. The Met's curators read Albrecht Dürer's woodcut as a distilled version of the first four seals of Revelation and name the riders left to right: Death on his pale horse, Famine with his scales, War carrying a sword, Plague with bow and crown. Earlier illustrated Bibles, the Met says, made the scene staid; here parallel lines set a middle tone, and against it horses and men overlap on a strong diagonal. An angel flies above them with open wings. At bottom left, the museum notes, the Mouth of Hell opens, ready for victims.
