About this painting

At the lower right, alone on the earth, Dürer stands in festive clothes beside a tablet bearing his signature. Everyone else is in heaven.

Matthäus Landauer founded a house for aged, destitute craftsmen, the Kunsthistorisches Museum says, and commissioned this altarpiece for its chapel: the Trinity adored by angels and saints and by believers of all times. The Web Gallery of Art reads the tiers: Mary leads the martyrs on the left, John the Baptist the prophets and kings on the right.

Among the clergy at left kneels the only layman, Landauer himself, being received by a cardinal.
