Most of the heads in this crowd have portrait features, and few can now be named. The National Gallery Prague says several were changed considerably in the restoration of 1839–41. Two keep their names: Maximilian, just being blessed by the Virgin, and the man under the tree at the right.
That is Dürer, looking on. The sheet in his hand carries his signature, the year and a line of Latin: he completed it in five months.
The museum reads the whole as an ideal feast of the Brotherhood of the Rosary, its blessing handed out as wreaths of roses.
