In the foreground St John kneels with his back to us, gazing up at the Lamb, beside a crowned elder. Revelation gives the two a conversation: the elder asks who the crowd in white robes are, and John answers that the elder knows.
The Minneapolis Institute of Art notes that Dürer's Apocalypse interprets a book that, amid the millennial fears of the 1490s, was very much on people's minds.
The answer is on the sheet. Above John a dense crowd holds palm branches aloft, and above them the Lamb stands in a radiant circle, four winged creatures at the corners.
