About this painting

The Child arrives already carrying his Passion. The Musei Capitolini point to him in the beam of divine light between the Father and the Dove, bringing the column of the flagellation and the cross, hung with the nails and the crown of thorns.

Below, the room is ordinary: a fire burning, kitchen utensils, a kitten on the floor. The Virgin is leafing through a book that, the museum notes after St Bernard of Clairvaux, held Isaiah's prophecy.

In front, on the floor, stands a small crystal vase of three carnations, garofani: the painter's signature.
